How To Beat Jet Lag and Get A Good Night's Sleep

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

I don't know about you but over the years jet lag has gotten worse and I was intrigued to discover natural ways of preventing or at least minimising the effects of jet lag and getting a good night's sleep while both traveling and home. Here are some ways you might not have heard of and more.

How To Beat Jet Lag and Get A Good Night's Sleep

Body Clock - What Makes Us Tick

Did you know that we all have an internal body clock? It regulates itself on both the amount and density of light that enters the eye. It is said you can minimise jet lag by timing when your flight arrives, so you can get the best light to help your internal body clock adjust naturally and much faster! Flying east? Arrive in the morning, if in the west schedule arrives in the late afternoon. Who knew?

What To Avoid For a Good Night Sleep

Caffeine is well known for keeping you awake, so tea and coffee are best avoided. These are also best avoided on flights too.

Did you know the light from devices and televisions can keep you awake? They can also disrupt sleep, with alerts and lighting up the room. That's why it is recommended to switch them off for at least an hour before going to bed.

Herbal Teas

There are a few different herbal teas said to calm, relax and induce sleep including chamomile tea but have you ever tried banana tea? Would love to hear what you think and if you enjoyed it.

Salt Bath/Shower

It used to be bad luck to spill salt as was once so expensive it was called "white gold". Today you can lavish in a salt bath to ease aching muscles and skin inflammation, during a shower to cleanse your energy, or to soak your feet. Salt can also be used as a skin scrub. Did you know taking an Epsom salt bath helps you detox and enhances your magnesium levels, which in turn promotes sleep?

Aromatherapy Oils

The beautiful drought-tolerant plant - Lavender is said to be calming and has soothing properties that reduce stress. Did you know Lavender essential oil is also said to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties? Which aids with minor burns and bug bites.

During research, studies have shown lavender increases slow-wave sleep, instrumental for slowing heartbeat and relaxing muscles. Which also aids with sleeping more soundly. A great natural way to induce ZZzzzz's.

Crystals

There are a few crystals that aid sleep too but Selenite (Satin Spar) is at the top of the list. It has a deeply calming and soothing energy that is also very effective to help to relieve stress. Place your Selenite under your pillow at night so that you can better absorb its energy and knowledge, or try it near your head, in a pouch around your neck, or in your hand.

Selenite can be found throughout the world but in Utah, there are large sheets, Mexico's "blades" can be found in the "cave of swords", then there is also Morocco and Madagascar.

Comfortable Room

While traveling it can sometimes be difficult to sleep in a hotel or new space. This can be down to the temperature, mattress, or possibly said to have been leftover energy from the person that stayed in the room before.

Did you know you can clear the energy by placing a glass with a mixture of salt and water where you sleep?

To travel you might also like to invest in a small travel kit including earplugs and an eye mask.

Did you know you can increase the room air quality, which in turn enhances the quality of your sleep with both a salt lamp and an aloe vera plant?

I sometimes feel like Goldilocks, bed too hard, too soft, and only sometimes just right ah! What has been the most comfortable hotel you have ever stayed in? For me, it has to have been the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf Hotel in San Francisco.
