Day Trip From Edinburgh To The Alnwick Garden

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

Cherry Blossom season happens just once a year at the beautiful Alnwick Garden by Alnwick Castle, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. With over 300 Prunus Serrulata 'Tai haku' trees it's a magical time to visit.

Visiting The Magical Cherry Blossoms At The Alnwick Garden

Reaching Alnwick

Travelling to Alnwick couldn't be any easier with a direct train (LNER) from Edinburgh Waverley Train Station to Alnmouth Train Station, taking only one hour. From there it's a short walk around the corner to Curly Lane to catch the X20 Arriva bus into Alnwick. The fifteen-minute journey takes you through the rolling countryside and onto the main street in Alnwick. The Alnwick Garden entrance is located opposite the bus stop. How easy is that?

I pre-booked my train ticket in advance and reserved seats on each specific journey (the train can be busy, as it's the one travelling to London).

Train Tickets; 1 x Adult Edinburgh to Alnmouth £14.40

1 x Adult Alnmouth to Edinburgh £17.00

Arriva Bus 1 x Adult return ticket £5.40 (You can now pay via contactless on-board the bus). Please note there is no service on a Sunday.

It's the same to return but in reverse. If you don't book your return train time please do check the train schedule.

Accommodation

There are lots of things to see and do in the area, why not extend your visit and stay in one of the lovely guest houses or small hotels. Accommodation can be scarce during peak times including school holidays. Please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Alnwick Garden

The garden is great to visit throughout the year, with my favourites being during spring with the magnificent cherry blossom display and during fall when the colourful autumnal foliage takes centre stage.

Walk through the covered floral walkways or enjoy watching the cascading waters in the garden centre piece from the nearby cafe. There is something for everyone to enjoy at The Alnwick Garden.

For more information on opening times and tickets, please visit the Alnwick Garden website.

Cherry Blossoms

The largest cherry orchard of its kind in the world puts on a dazzling display with its copper-coloured foliage and white scented blossoms. Not to be missed!
